Natural Wonder

My friend called me because her son had seen a baby deer nestled among a neighbor's flowers. Of course we went to check it out. You can't tell in the top picture, but this fawn was the closest to a newborn I've ever seen--it was the size of a cat!
We oohed and aahed, and watched it breathe and open its eyes. Just being that close to something so small (for its species) was amazing enough. None of us touched it, and my friend reported that it was gone by afternoon, hopefully into the trees where belongs. In a month or two it will probably be back, eating my daylilies and hostas along with the rest of its family.Truly wonder-full!
